Chalon-sur-Saône, first mentioned in the Gaulish war of Julius Caesar and later the capital of the Burgundian kingdom, has an important historic quarter with old half-timbered houses, numerous alleys, towers, an old episcopal palace, and Gallo-Roman and medieval remains. The contemporary Chalon-sur-Saône also offers various cultural centers.
